tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale for the Mercedes Golf Championships, opening event of the 1999 PGA Tour, to be played Jan. 4-10 at the Kapalua Resort on Maui.

An elite field of 1998 tournament winners will compete for a $2.6 million purse. Among them are Tiger Woods, Masters and British Open champion Mark O'Meara, U.S. Open winner Lee Janzen, PGA champ Vijay Sigh, Fred Couples, Davis Love III, Tom Watson, David Duval, Justin Leonard, John Cook and defending Mercedes champion Phil Mickelson.

Phone orders will be taken by The Connection, 1-800-333-3388. Tickets also can be purchased at various locations on Maui, Kapalua Resorts pro shops, the Kapalua Logo Schops, Body and Bath Shop at Kapalua, the Honolulu Store and the information booth at Kaahumanu Shopping Center.

3-ON-3 BASKETBALL CHALLENGE: Bowl Games of Hawaii will host the 10th annual MDA 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Restaurant Row, with some 300 teams taking part in the fund-raising tournament for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hawaii Chapter.

There also will be a First Hawaiian Bank Shot contest, the Loves Bakery 3-point contest and the CompUSA Long Distance Challenge.

All competitors will have a chance to win two free tickets to the Jeep Aloha Bowl-Jeep Oahu Bowl doubleheader on Christmas Day.

HPU WOMEN LOSE THIRD: The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team suffered its third setback on a season-opening road trip, bowing to Humboldt State, 2-1, yesterday at Arcata, Calif.

Jannicke Snidal scored the Sea Warriors' goal.

PLANE PULL AT HICKAM: The Hawaiian Plane Pull to benefit Special Olympics Hawaii will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hickam Air Force Base.

Up to 35 teams will pull a Hawaiian Airline DC-9, competing for fastest time from a dead standstill and for lowest combined team weight pull. Teams can be made up of any combination of men, women and children of all ages; 20 pullers and five alternates.

Entry fees are $500 per team or $20 per individual.

LINFIELD HAS HAWAIIAN PUNCH: Fifteen players from Hawaii high schools are on the Linfield (Ore.) College football team this fall.

They are offensive linemen Daryl Agpalsa of Kamehameha, Kainoa Hopfe of St. Louis, Ian Kami of Waiakea and Trent Nakashima of Baldwin; wide receivers James Yen of Kamehameha and Andrew Inocelda of Mid-Pacific; tailbacks Carlton Helm of Kamehameha and Sean Jardin of Waimea; slotback Kevin Perry of Punahou; defensive linemen Bruce Assily of St. Louis and Doug Koehler of Waiakea; linebacker Brett Radcliffe of Mid-Pacific, and defensive backs J.P. Kloning-er of Hawaii Prep, and Eldon Masa-oka and Andrew Rager of Waiakea.
