Dems list
not very exclusive

Mug shot DEMOCRATIC Party chief Walter Heen responds to an item here about former GOP chairwoman Jane Tatibouet and husband Andre receiving six free tickets to attend the Al Gore rally and hear the vice president speak. Heen says that tickets were to be sent out to those whose name appeared on certain "lists" as contributors or supporters of the Democrats. I'd venture that Jane Tatibouet, in any case, was neither. But who knows how names get on those mysterious lists, anyway? Heen admits he found one list containing the name of Linda Lingle, who's favored to win the GOP nomination for governor. Heen pulled that one out of the loop, avoiding more potential embarrassment, even if the Tatibouets slipped through...

IT wasn't all politics for Gore and wife Tipper when they were here. They took time out to meet Maui artist Jan Kasprzychi and wife Kathy. The meeting was set up by golf course designer Robert Trent Jones, Jr., a friend of Gore's and long-time Kasprzychi collector...

ANYONE else notice that the congressman calling for no delay in taking action on the Ken Starr report on "Monica-gate" is Texas GOP Rep. Tom DeLay... Star-Bulletin reporter Lori Tighe (pronounced "tie") is off to the mainland to attend the wedding of her brother-in-law to a woman whose first name is Tye. Rather than go through life known as "Tie-Tie," she's keeping her maiden name. Smart woman...

Hello, congrats, goodbye

RESTAURANTS: They come, they celebrate birthdays, they go. Newly opened locally, as noted earlier, is Hank's Cafe Honolulu on Nuuanu. And opening this week in San Francisco is MoMo's, across the street from the S.F. Giants new stadium site. My friend Peter Osborne, who owns the place, says of MoMo's, "It's so good that they have to build a 42,000-seat waiting room across the street."... Celebrating its 10th birthday is Chef Beverly Gannon's Haili'imaile General Store, and to celebrate they're inviting kids born on Maui the same day the restaurant opened (Oct. 14, 1988) to be guests for dinner that night along with their families. Call the eatery if you qualify... And closing Sept. 14 is India House, which Chef Ram Arora is shuttering after 18 years on South King. He's the former chef at the late, lamented Third Floor who introduced naan bread to isle diners...

Once thought of by many as a classic Ivory Tower kind of guy, UH president Ken Mortimer is much more in evidence on campus this year. He's been greeting new dorm residents at their quarters, even schlepping some boxes and suitcases around for them. An "Ask Me" bar (non-alcohol drinks) was set up so students to could put faces to the names of administrators who manned booths and handled questions. A nice addition to campus life, especially for newcomers...

THE next "Full Moon" jazz concert at David Paul's Diamond Head Grill is Sunday night. It stars Jimmy Borges with Teresa Bright and Down Under trumpeter Murray Tanner with a local quartet consisting of Betty Loo Taylor, Noel Okimoto, Steve Jones and Gabe Baltazar...

Curtistown

LOCAL singer Betsy Curtis, who performs at the Hapuna Beach Hotel, has recorded two CDs. One is with the band that has backed her at the Hapuna for the past four years and the second with Olliephonic Horns, a local band which gigs at the Blue Dolphin Restaurant in Kawaihae on Fridays. She happened to be in one night and sat in, only to find they were taping the session live and she ended up on three cuts...
