LACANAU PRO ENDS IN TIE: The Kana Beach Lacanau Pro surf meet ended in a four-way tie for third place when small surf prevented the final round of the ASP/Kahlua World Championship Tour event to take place yesterday.
Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard, along with Australians Layne Beachley, Pam Burridge and Serena Brooke, each received $4,000. Beachley clinched the WCT world championship last week.
FIVE STATE RECORDS: The Yamauchi brothers, Bryce and Kyle, set five state records in their respective weight divisions at the Team Hawaii Weightlifting meet Saturday at the Nuuanu YMCA.
Bryce, 14, snatched 99 pounds and jerked 127 pounds to total 226 pounds in the 103-pound boys weight division.
Kyle, 15, snatched 160 pounds and totaled 341 in the 123-pound juniors class.
Natalie Mew set a state record in the 105-pound women's jerk with a lift of 138 pounds.
TWO AT ACADEMY: Two former Punahou School athletes again will be competing for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy this season.
Kawika Lucas, a Punahou product, will captain the soccer team. He is 5-foot-9 senior midfielder.
Malia Schoch begins her second season with the volleyball team. She is a 5-7 sophomore outside hitter.
