I read about the American Family Publishers agreement in New York this week in what has been described as a deceptive promotion practice. Hawaii not part of latest
sweepstakes settlementThe story said that 12,000 New Yorkers will each get $60 for subscriptions bought in what authorities consider a deceptive promotion campaign.
The story also said that in March, American Family Publishers reached a $25 million settlement with 32 other states and the District of Columbia. Was Hawaii ever part of any of these settlements?
The State Office of Consumer Protection said that the agreement announced this week only pertained to the state of New York, which was not party to the March settlement. Hawaii and the 31 other states as well as the District of Columbia each received $50,000 to cover investigation and court costs, attorney fees and other expenses. The money in Hawaii also will be used to further the operations of the Office of Consumer Protection.

How can I write to Helen Prejean, the nun who wrote the book on which Dead Man Walking was based?
Address your correspondence to: Sister Helen Prejean, 317 Bonnabel Blvd., Metairie, La. 70005.
I was under impression that blue lights were only allowed on police vehicle. On Aug. 25 I saw a blue light bar on a pick up truck driven by private security companies. I called the Wahiawa police station and was told that private security companies use them. What gives?
You are right. The Hawaii Revised Statute 29-31.5 authorizes only county police departments and department of public safety vehicles to have a blue light attached to a car, motorcycle or motor scooter. Police officials suggest that when you see that vehicle again to take down the company's name and license of the vehicle and report it to 911.
To Amanda, the cashier at Longs in Kahala Mall, for running out to the parking lot to return my checkbook. She returned it before I missed it. I had many things on my mind and inadvertently left it on the counter. It prevented much headaches and problems. Thank you very much, Amanda. -- L.N. Mahalo
To the man who used foul language in front of the cashier at the Beretania Times Market on Aug. 25 when he found out the cigarettes he was going to buy cost more than he expected. Auwe!!!
And auwe also to the man at McCully Zippy's restaurant the night before for insulting an employee when she didn't answer his question quickly enough. Live Aloha and learn some manners.
To the man who purposely slammed his car door into our car door at the parking lot of Office Depot. He did that for no reason on Aug. 24. He drives a gray Mazda sedan and works for a plumbing company. Auwe!!!
