Polititians serve
substance for onceSEPTEMBER is the month when legislators of various political stripes gather for the good of their constituents in the non-political aisles of Foodland. They're all joining the HMSA in its campaign to promote "5 a Day." This doesn't refer to a $5 donation daily, but the intake of five servings of fruits and vegetables each day as a way to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases. Suiting up will be State Senators Matt Matsunaga, Rod Tom, Wayne Metcalf and Avery Chumbley, along with Reps. Ken Ito, Sam Aiona, David Tarnas and Hermina Morita. They'll don chef's hats and do cooking demonstrations of favorite healthy recipes throughout September. As HMSA spokesman Fred Fortin says, "It'll be refreshing to see politicians dish out something other than bologna for a change." ...
ALSO involved in healthy cooking is chef Alan Wong. The American Heart Association is holding "An Evening with Alan Wong, From the Heart." The sold-out benefit will be at Alan Wong's Restaurant and joining him will be TV's Emme Tomimbang. She, like Wong, has suffered from high blood pressure, and between the two they help to educate others in selecting healthy items. Also, Hawaiian Airlines CEO Paul Casey, who was hospitalized recently, will be on hand and will likely say a few words about his health episode for the first time ...
Dog day afternoon
HARD to believe but this is the last day of August -- the dog days. And indeed, some 500 of Hawaii's top show dogs will be involved in the 118th annual all-breed dog show at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Anyone who's been to such a show knows that while the dogs range from downright plug-ugly to sublime, the real fun is in watching the owners trying to get them to do as they're told. Amazing, but the dog shows go back to monarchy times ...AFTER attending the Al Gore rally in Honolulu, Rev. Jesse Jackson got away for a quiet time on Maui, and was spotted looking reverentially at artworks by Miles Davis and Muhammad Ali at Celebrities Gallery in Lahaina. When a group of admirers began gathering around, he and his family beat a hasty retreat ... Saturday was the birthday of Charlie Parker, and to celebrate, Loretta Ables sang "Lullaby of Birdland," named for the "Bird," and Jim Howard and Bruce Hamada did a couple of Bird originals at the Lewers Lounge ...
MAUNA Lani G.M. Don Dickhens is all smiles today. His property appears on the cover of the September issue of Conde Nast Traveler. Inside, the Bungalows are featured in a six-page feature on supremely private hotel villas coast-to-coast ...
Bows on the go
THEY'RE calling the school spirit activities on the UH campus "Pride '98," with lots of fun things leading up to the first UH football game of the season with Dick Tomey's Arizona Wildcats. Today there's an attempt to best the Guinness record of 18 college students crammed into a new VW Beetle. The participants will have fun whether they break the record or not ... And that big UH football helmet the UH Rainbow footballers run through before Aloha Stadium games will be on the front lawn at UH's Bachman Hall through Wednesday. And, of course, there'll be a huge tailgate party prior to the game Thursday on the lawn. For $4 people can bus to and from the game. Such a deal! Finally, Mortimer appeared on the "Price of Paradise" radio show yesterday, with guest host Jim Leahey, voice of the Rainbows, first replacement for Randall Roth who left to join the Linda Lingle for Governor ...
