Na Mele concert
rescheduled

Slack-key guitarist Ledward Kaapana will open the Bob Dylan concerts Sept. 17 at Maui Arts and Cultural Center and Sept. 19 concert at Andrews Amphitheatre.

That means Kaapana's "Na Mele O Hawai'i" show at the Academy of Arts had to be rescheduled to accommodate the Dylan shows.

Kaapana and steel guitarist Bob Brozman will perform instead, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in the academy central courtyard. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the academy information desk or may be ordered by sending checks to: Academy Theatre, 90 S. Beretania St., Honolulu, HI, 96814. Dogs have their day

The largest of Hawaii's dog shows returns to the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall for its 117th and 118th all-breed shows Sept. 12 and 13.

Featured will be approximately 500 of Hawaii's top show dogs, strutting for American Kennel Club judges from Australia, New Mexico, California and New York.

In addition, the Fox Terrier Club of Hawaii will have its 35th Specialty Show Sept. 12.

Judging will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. All-day admission to either show is $3 for adults and $1 for children. For more information, call 262-5236.

Classic sounds on HPR

September is Classical Music Month on Hawaii Public Radio, with a series of special broadcasts airing on KHPR 88.1 FM and KKUA 90.7 FM. The schedule follows:

bullet Sept. 13: "An Evening of Romantic Chamber Music," 8 p.m. -- Features musicians from the Honolulu Symphony performing Schubert's Piano Quintet in A, "Trout," and Schumann's Piano Quartet in Eb, Op. 47.

bullet Sept. 20: "The New York Philharmonic Live!," 8 p.m. -- All-Beethoven program features the "Leonore" Overtures Nos. 1-3, the overture to "Fidelio" and Symphony No. 1 in C.

bullet Sept. 27: "Introducing Robert Pollock," 8 p.m. -- The Maui resident performs 20th century keyboard works composed by himself, Gershwin, Mazurek, Kalimoullin, Dziadek, Sessions and more.

In addition, there will be "George Gershwin Centennial Saturday" programs Sept. 26 on the 100th anniversary of the composer's death, with an 8 a.m. documentary; 10 a.m. "Performance Today" all-Gershwin show; "Porgy and Bess" documentary at noon; 1 p.m. "NPR World of Opera" presentation; 4 p.m. Carnegie Hall Jazz Band Gershwin show; 4:30 p.m. "Gershwin in Paris" documentary special; and 8 p.m. showcase of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performing Gershwin music.

The Gershwin celebration ends with the 9 a.m. Sept. 27 airing of "Who Could Ask For Anything More? A Century of Gershwin," with archival recordings.
