Three arrested in sale of pound of crystal meth

Two California men and a man from Aiea were arrested last night in Waikiki after allegedly selling one pound of crystal methamphetamine to an undercover officer.

The arrests of Kenneth Scott Holmes, 27, and James Wilson, 33, of Los Angeles, and Salamone Afalava, 38, of an Ulune Street address occurred at about 9:30 p.m. at Lewers Street and Kalia Road.

The three men were charged today for possession with intent to distribute crystal meth, said FBI spokesman John Gillies.

Gillies said Holmes is "considered a significant player because Hawaii has been his market and he has made previous trips here for two or three years dealing in additional pounds of crystal meth."

'Family neighborhoods' bill would ban sex shops

The opening of a new adult-entertainment store in McCully has prompted area Councilman Andy Mirikitani to introduce a bill banning sex-oriented establishments from "family neighborhoods."

Mirikitani is introducing a bill that would bar adult-entertainment stores from operating within 500 feet of homes, schools, churches or an existing store of a like nature. The bill is similar in language to a New York City zoning law, he said.

Erik Clabaugh, general manager of the newly opened INSERECTION, said his store has been open for about a week and is one of a chain headquartered in Atlanta.

The store features sales and rentals of videos, he said. It also sells novelty items, games, lotions and oils.

There is no live entertainment nor are there plans to do so, he said.

Another volunteer, Steve Reinhart of Makawao, Maui, is on alert to help with the logistics of providing relief after Hurricane Bonnie.

Candidate arrested in marijuana search

HILO -- Hawaii County Council candidate Jonathan Adler, 46, was arrested yesterday after police found 89 marijuana plants growing at his home in rural Hawaiian Paradise Park, police said.

Executing a search warrant, police also found drug paraphernalia including marijuana stalks and seeds, smoking pipes, and containers with marijuana residue.

A marijuana legalization advocate who believes drug laws don't make sense, Adler ran unsuccessfully for mayor two years ago using the phrase "Make Sense," even incorporating the slogan in his name on the ballot.

He has been using the same phrase in his current campaign.

Adler was released pending further investigation.

In a separate action, police arrested a 23-year-old Hawaiian Acres woman when 93 marijuana plants were found in an indoor growing operation at her home.

She was released pending investigation.

The two arrests were made as police conducted a third day of marijuana eradication in east Hawaii, seizing 8,371 plants. That brought the three-day total to 13,863.

Sales of city lands could gain stiffer rules

The city administration would have to meet tougher requirements before surplus city lands could be sold, under a bill passed by the City Council's Budget Committee.

Under the bill, procedures would be set up for selecting purchasers of city property, including standards for invitations for bids, requests for offers and direct negotiations.

The bill also restricts communication between the finance director and prospective bidders before a deadline for bids, and prohibits certain actions after a deadline. The proposal further protects confidential information in a solicitation.

The language is similar to the city's procurement code relating to the purchase of goods and services.
