Ballard third
in Rip Pro Curl

Kauai surfer Rochelle Ballard took third place in the Hossegor Rip Curl Pro meet at Hossegor, France, yesterday.

John Shimooka tied for fifth in the men's division, with Kaipo Jaquias and Andy Irons tied for ninth.

Ballard is ranked No. 2 in the latest women's world tour ratings. behind Australia's Layne Beachley, who won the Hossegor title.

Shane Dorian is Hawaii's top-rated men's surfer, in sixth place. Daniel Wills of Australia is No. 1.

SEKI SHOOTS 74: Punahou senior Jim Seki Jr. shot a 4-over-par 74 in yesterday's first round of qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship at Rochester, N.Y.

Seki is tied for 96th, six strokes off the pace. The 312-player field will be cut to 64 for match play after today's round.
