Isle Republicans are unperturbed that Vice President Al Gore is in town today campaigning for his fellow Democrats, particularly Gov. Ben Cayetano and U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie. The reason: the Hawaii GOP is bringing in its own heavy hitter from the mainland to help Linda Lingle, the gubernatorial challenger and Maui mayor. New Jersey governor
will address GOP dinnerOn Sept. 11, New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman will be the featured speaker at a $1,000-per-person fund-raising dinner limited to 120 people at the Kahala Mandarin Hotel.
Whitman, Lingle campaign manager Bob Awana said, "is a moderate Republican in a Democratic state, so we draw some neat parallels there."
Also on Sept. 11, Whitman will attend a reception for current and prospective members of the Hawaii GOP's Team Hawaii, who contribute $250 to $6,000 to the party.
On Oct. 3, Steve Forbes, who's expected to again seek the GOP presidential nomination, will be featured at a fund-raiser for the isle GOP and the winner of the Republican gubernatorial nomination - Lingle is facing former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi in the primary.
