City lifeguards rescued about 40 people from high surf along Oahu's south- and west-facing shores yesterday, including seven children in Nanakuli.

Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Lt. Dennis Gouveia said three children were swept offshore by surf at Nanakuli Beach Park, and four at "Depots" near Nanaikapono Elementary School in mid-day incidents. No injuries were reported in either case.

Lifeguards also rescued a male swimmer, who was swept by currents several thousand yards down the coast from Aki's to Makaha Beach. He was not injured.

A high surf advisory remained in effect for all Hawaii's south shores, said the National Weather Service today, as did small-craft advisories for all Hawaiian waters.

Yesterday, high surf and strong winds caused problems for about 30 people off Waikiki and Ala Moana beach, but none were seriously injured, says Capt. Bruce Lee. "We expect similar conditions today, but it might not be as busy with the kids back in school," he said.

More big surf is predicted for later this week, said Gouveia.
