Hear rare performance
on Chinese pipa

Madame Ya-Li, one of the world's foremost players of the pipa, a four-stringed, pear-shaped lute, will perform at the University of Hawaii Orvis Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

Tickets are $10 general and $5 for students, and may be reserved by calling 956-3836.

Yu, who was recently honored with a Best Music Teacher Award from the Chinese government, will also be teaching a noncredit workshop 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 26, on the compositions, composers, instruments and training of Chinese musicians. The workshop will be held in the UH music building, room 36 and there is a $15 fee to attend. To register, call 956-8400.

Rita Marley added to show

Rita Marley, widow of Bob Marley and mother of Ziggy Marley and a reggae artist in her own right, will join Chaka Demus and Pliers for three concerts during Labor Day weekend.

An original member of the I-Threes female groups, she has recorded solo albums and manages her husband's musical legacy. The concert dates are:

bullet Sept. 4 -- Kona Surf Convention Center, at 8 p.m. Admission is $26; $22 in advance.
bullet Sept. 5 -- Waikiki Shell, at 6 p.m. Admission is $20 to $25, $18.50 in advance.
bullet Sept. 6 -- Maui Arts Center Amphitheater, at 3 p.m. Admission is $26; $18.50 advance through Aug. 17.

Interpretive hikes slated

The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii is sponsoring interpretive hikes in the Honouliuli nature preserve, which is home to more than 60 rare and endangered species of plants and animals. The hikes are scheduled as follows:

bullet Along the Palikea Trail, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 6. This is considered a strenuous hike, so hikers must be 13 or older.
bullet Along the Honouliuli Contour Trail, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required for each hike. Call 537-4508, ext. 252.

International fest goes Latin

The 10th Annual Hawaii International Music Festival has a Latin accent this year. Headlining the event are Rolando Sanchez & Salsa Hawaii, Son Reinas, Carmen Jimenez, Sabrina and Emilia. Events are:

bullet Sept. 4 -- Latin Music Festival Ball, 8 p.m. in the Hibiscus Ballroom of the Ala Moana Hotel.
bullet Sept. 5 -- Latin Cabaret Night, 10 p.m. at the Aloha Showroom at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.
bullet Sept. 6 -- Hot Latin Explosion Night, 8 p.m. at Gussie L'Amour's club.

Admission to each event is $20; all three nights is $50.

Academy music series begins

A new season of the Academy of Arts' Hawaiian music series, "Na Mele O Hawai'i," begins with a slack-key guitar concert by Bob Brozman and Ledward Kaapana.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in the Academy Theatre.

Brozman is National Steel Guitar Champion, while Kaapana is considered one of the finest players in Hawaii and one of the founders of Hui Ohana.
