


Hawaii's Sunny Garcia, the world's seventh-ranked surfer, was eliminated by French wildcard Mical Picon in a second-round upset yesterday in the Rip Curl Pro at Hossegor, France. Garcia bounced in
pro surf meetShane Dorian won his second-round heat but fellow Hawaii pro Pancho Sullivan was ousted by Californian Shea Lopez.
Megan Abubo of Hawaii lost in Round 2 of the women's competition to Prue Jeffries of Australia.
The men's second round was cut short after four heats when conditions deteriorated. It was to be completed today, with Hawaii surfers Kaipo Jaquias, Ross Williams, Kalani Robb, John Shimooka and Derek Ho trying to move ahead.
On Wednesday, Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard advanced to the women's quarterfinals and Andy Irons and Shawn Sutton of Hawaii won their way into the men's third round.
ALLEN LEAVES UH FOR CAL-IRVINE: Kathy-Lyn Allen, a former Auburn swimming All-American and prep record-setter for Roosevelt High School, has left her assistant coaching job at the University of Hawaii to become the assistant men's and women's swim coach at UC Irvine.
IN-LINE HOCKEY AT PEARL HARBOR: An in-line hockey tournament Sept. 5-7 with pee wee, bantam, midget and adult divisions will mark the grand opening of the new Paquet in-line skating facility at Pearl Harbor.
The entry fee is $250 per team.
The 145-foot by 80-foot rink was constructed over three tennis courts on the Naval Submarine Base. It has a skating surface of 3/8-inch-thick interlocking plastic tiles and is surrounded by a 42-inch-high dasher board. The facility will be officially unveiled at 10 a.m., Sept. 4.

CEO GOLF TOURNAMENT: More than 70 Hawaii executives, including Honolulu mayor Jeremy Harris, will play in a Jaguar CEO Tour golf tournament on Sept. 9 at the Ko Olina course.
There will be A, B and C flights, based on handicap.
Last year's winners were Elton Tanaka of Sears (low gross) and Larry Johnson of Bank of Hawaii (low net).
CYCLING CLINICS: Free Century Ride cycling clinics will be offered by Island Triathlon & Bike to help riders get ready for the Hawaii Bicycling League Century Ride on Sept. 20.
