Jossem charging
to PGA Pro-Am

Mug shot SOMETIMES it's better to be lucky than good. Just ask local attorney Jared Jossem. The former local GOP chairman was lecturing his son, Adam, on fiscal responsibility, as any good Republican father would. Adam rowed for the University of Washington crew and made the Dean's List twice, prompting perhaps too much celebration using his MasterCard. So, attorney Jossem was skeptically concerned when he got an express delivery from the charge card folks. But it turned out that the card used by Adam was a PGA MasterCard and had been put in a drawing and won a spot for dad in the January '99 Pro-Am Senior PGA Tour event at Hualalai! At last report, Jossem is leaning toward profligate spending and has extended Adam's line of credit for the coming year.

LOCAL actress Kathleen Stuart is finalizing plans for her trip to London, where she'll be entering Mountview Conservatory for the Performing Arts. The 17-year-old Castle High grad will be in some pretty heady company there, but I have a feeling will more than hold her own. One advantage Mountview has over other theater schools is that all graduates are guaranteed a personal audition with the world's No. 1 showman at the moment, Cameron Mackintosh, the man who gave the world "Les Miserables." Life is anything but miserable for Kathleen these days, and she's promised Diamond Head Theatre director John Rampage she'll be home for Christmas to see the second incarnation of "A Wonderful Life," in which she appeared last year. That title sort of sums the world of Kathleen's these days ...

Reliving the 'Moments'

TOO rarely these days do we see follow-ups on people who made news -- a kind of, "What are they up to now?" Emme Tomimbang takes on three such opportunities on her "Best of Emme's Island Moments" slated for Monday at 9 p.m. on KHON-TV. Martin Nievera, who co-hosted the show with Emme from the Philippines in 1996, returns to talk about his many life changes and the ups and downs of being a celeb in Manila. There's Brook Lee, who talked with Emme in April of '97 just before the Miss Universe Pageant. Now, having relinquished her title (and given herself a much ballyhooed haircut), Brook is back with a tale of post-pageant syndrome and her future plans. And finally, Keli'i Kaneali'i and Barry Flanagan, known collectively as Hapa, appeared in Emme's premiere show in January of '94. After an absence from the musical scene, they're back and sharing Hawaiian music with all who'll listen both here and on the mainland ...

SPEAKING of Hawaiian music, there'll be lots of it at the fund-raiser Aug. 30 for Jamie Wong, on leave from Nature Conservancy while undergoing numerous treatments for Hodgkin's lymphoma, a severe form of cancer. They hope to raise $10,000 to cover out-of-pocket expenses, and volunteering to entertain are Haunani Apoliona, Ho'okena, Halau O Ke 'A'ali'i Ku Makani, Chant, 'Elua Kane, Makaleka Street Band, Ben Vegas, Jonny Kamai and Brother to Brother. The concert (and a craft sale) will take place at St. John Vianney Church, 940 Keolu Drive. For more info call 247-3016 ...

Cruising right along

NOW'S the time for those who say they'd like to do a three-, four- or seven-day cruise around the islands on the S.S. Independence, but can't afford it. There'll be five such cruises beginning Sept. 12 with two-for-one kamaaina fares. And great entertainment too, including concerts with Don Ho. Call a travel agent or 1-800-765-7000 for details ...
