


Jamie Dixon has returned to the University of Hawaii men's basketball staff. He replaces Jeff Law, who resigned last month to become the interim head coach at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Dixon rejoins UH
basketball staffDixon was the Rainbows' strategist from 1992-94. In his final season, Hawaii went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1972.
After leaving Hawaii, Dixon spent four years at Northern Arizona as the top assistant and recruiter for the Lumberjacks.
"It's good to be back in Hawaii," said Dixon, who will assist recruiting coordinator Jackson Wheeler. "I've always liked it here. Things have changed since I left ... the arena being one of them. I'm looking forward to it."
UH NEWCOMERS' HONOR ROLL: The University of Hawaii placed 13 student-athletes on the Western Athletic Conference's freshman and newcomer All-Academic teams.
Honored from UH were soccer players Megan Lytle and Leila Wai, cross-country runners Kristina Liddell and Mersaides Martin, women's basketball players Crystal Lee and Sarah Petersen, men's swimmers Matthew Kwok and Angus MacDonald, women's golfer Marla Boivie, men's tennis player Amandeep Singh, women's tennis players Lynn Novack and Katherine Scott, and softball player Kanani Bona.
THREE ISLE SURFERS ADVANCE: Andy Irons and Shawn Sutton of Hawaii won their first-round heats in the Rip Curl Pro surfing championships at Hossegor, France, yesterday.
Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard, the world's second-ranked woman surfer, breezed to a first-round win.
MATSUMURA IN PGA JUNIORS HUNT: Jaime Matsumura of Lihue shot a 1-over-par 73 in yesterday's opening round for a share of fifth place in the boys' division of the Maxfli PGA Junior Golf Championships at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
In girls' play, Shayna Miyajima of Wailuku shot an 82 and was tied for 31st place.
The boys' leader in the 17-and-under competition was Chris Hill of Springfield, Mo., with a 2-under 70. The girls' pacesetter was Leigh Anne Hardin of Martinsville, Ind., with a first-round record 6-under 66.
MIYASHIRO SEVENTH IN OKLAHOMA: Dawn Miyashiro of Hilo shot a final-round 73 to finish seventh in a field of 45 girls at the Independent Insurance Agents Junior Golf Classic at Edmond, Okla., last week.
Maui's Garrett Okamura was 46th out of 135 boys.
HOCKEY EXPO: The Great Hawaiian Hockey Expo, featuring tips on inline and ice-hockey play, shooting speed and accuracy contests and an equipment swap meet, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 29, in the Dole Cannery parking lot .
