Waikiki pipeline work
to conclude in December

What is going on at the corner of Kalakaua and Paoakalani avenues in Waikiki? It seems like construction has been going on there for over a year now.

Work to install a new pressurized waste-water pipeline to replace one that had insufficient capacity at Paoakalani and Kalakaua avenues began in May 1997. The technology being used is microtunneling, said Doug Woo, city information specialist for the environment.

The $3.1 million job, awarded to Delta Construction Co., was supposed to finish in one year.

However, "the microtunneling machine went off alignment due to unstable soil conditions," causing the delay, Woo said.

The new completion date is mid-December.

At the same time, generally in the late afternoons, I have been receiving calls at home, and as soon as I answer the phone there is a silence and then someone hangs up. What is going on here? Can something be done about this?

Several options are available to customers who are experiencing annoying calls, according to GTE/Hawaiian Tel spokesman Keith Kamisugi. He didn't want to speculate on who may be generating the calls and suggested that you could subscribe to Caller ID, which displays the telephone number of the incoming call. Call tracing is another service that traces annoying, threatening or harassing calls. Hawaiian Tel customers may call 643-3456 for more information about these services. If a customer receives chronic annoying calls, he or she also may contact the GTE nuisance call bureau at 1-800-257-2969 for assistance, Kamisugi said.

To the police officer who helped us on Aug. 4 at Koko Head. We are visitors from France who visited your islands to attend a wedding of a friend. We locked ourselves out of a car at around 5 p.m. Aug. 4, and a police officer spent a half-

hour helping us. We never got his name, but do remember that he was in a police car marked No. 683. - Ernie and Joelle Lehu, and Patrick and Josy Fruit.

To the owners of Luau Party Rentals for their aloha at the Kailua July 4th parade. They observed Dad and I trying to secure an umbrella above my 87-year-old mother's wheelchair, and they invited us under their tent. They also provided the tent for the reviewing-stand judges - great protection from both sun and rain. - Dotty Myrdal

To the person driving a four-door brown compact sedan at 5:50 p.m. July 30. I was picking up my friend at Liberty House in Ala Moana Center. Upon waiting for the way to clear, this person, from the wrong direction, drove right in front of me to get into a handicapped stall. Does it take too much time to go around and come the correct way? Also, the handicap placard was not displayed on the rearview mirror. I am providing the number to the state Department of Transportation. - Kathy

I am looking for a retired couple I met July 21 at the Marukai checkout stand. They offered me used parts. I misplaced the phone number; call me at 455-1976.
