to be selectedPaul Arnett, who covers University of Hawaii football for the Star-Bulletin, has been named to the selection committee that chooses the Heisman Trophy winner, according to the Downtown Athletic Club in New York.
Arnett, who has covered Rainbow football for the Star-Bulletin since 1990, is the first Heisman voter ever from Hawaii. He is one of 911 voters on the panel.
"It's nice that Hawaii now has a vote for the Heisman Trophy," Arnett said. "I'm happy to be the first."
Arnett also is a member of the Football Writers Association of America and is a member of the panel that chooses the Doak Walker Award, given each year to the top collegiate running back in the country.
"When asked if Paul would be a good member of the selection committee, we recommended him enthusiastically, because of his caring about collegiate football, its past as well as its future," Bowl Games of Hawaii chief executive officer Lenny Klompus said.
Klompus also announced today that Bowl Games of Hawaii recently signed a four-year joint marketing and promotion contract with the Downtown Athletic Club.
The two entities had been operating on a year-to-year basis.
"Everywhere (Heisman representatives) go, the Hula Bowl is promoted. I can't beat that," Klompus said.
Under the agreement, the Heisman Trophy winner will play in the Hula Bowl if he is a senior.
