Gore slips away
to Garden Isle

Mug shot Iam not suggesting that Vice President Al Gore was trying to distance himself from his boss when Bill Clinton made his address from the White House Monday night. But by flying to Kauai, Gore chose the furthest place he could be from Washington, D.C., without leaving the United States. Whatever the final outcome of events, the saddest thing isn't that Clinton had to admit to his wife and daughter that he had an "inappropriate" relationship with a 21-year-old intern. The saddest thing is that Monica Lewinsky, having spilled her guts to her alleged "friend," Linda Tripp, will now and forever be known for one thing and one thing only. No matter whom she meets or whatever endeavor she manages to engage in, she'll be met with that raised eyebrow and knowing look, and that's sad. Tripp probably will come out with a book (through her cuddly companion, agent Lucienne Goldberg) filled with transcriptions of her conversations with Monica. And, despite the fact people say they're fed up with the story, it'll probably sell. That, too, is sad ...

SPEAKING of glass houses, which President Clinton learned the White House is, Rev. Robert Schuller of "Crystal Cathedral" fame has been in Maui and happened by the newly opened Nick's Fishmarket in the Kea Lani Hotel. Being a friend of Nick's owner Aaron Placourakis, he delivered a special blessing on the spot, wishing everyone success and happiness ... And speaking of Maui, the seventh annual D.E. Eastman "Look Good, Feel Great" Family Day of Health and Beauty takes place Sunday at the Kaahumanu Shopping Center. The event, a benefit for the Maui AIDS Foundation, features haircuts, manicures, facials, foot massages, body massages and psychic readings, each for just $10. The fund-raiser is named for event founder and Maui resident Daniel Eastman, who for decades was Hollywood beauty consultant to stars Cher, Lynda Carter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Suzanne Somers, Lisa Hartmann Black and many others ...

Polly want a coconut?

A FRAZZLED Ohio woman named Kim West called the local Tori Richard headquarters and pleaded, "I need more buttons." The plea was passed on to Pacific marketing director Mark Troedson, who was curious as to why. West explained that she got a new Tori Richard shirt, but that her pet parrot had taken a serious liking to the garment's coconut buttons and has been pecking them off. Troedson figured the buttons ought to be guaranteed for life, parrots or not, so he saw that new ones were sent to the parrot's owner ...

TWO people who must be thrilled that Sports Illustrated picked the Jacksonville Jaguars to win the NFL Super Bowl by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are ex-Star-Bulletin sportswriters Mike Fitzgerald and Dave Reardon. Both now work in Florida for the Gainesville (Fla.) Sun ... Locally, we'll have a Super Brew -- Chef Sam Choy's new Big Aloha Beer, which he'll unveil at UH's season-opening football game Sept. 3 at Aloha Stadium ...

Zipping right along

THE first vehicle to enter the ZipLane on its opening day was the KSSK Prize Van. As Be-Jay Kodama drove and D.J. Jim Erickson filed reports with on-air personalities Perry & Price, the voice of Sweetie Pacarro was heard singing "Zippity Do Dah" in the background. Then a listener called to ask Perry & Price to speed up the van. Seems the woman caller was behind the van in the ZipLane. She was heading for the hospital and her water had just broken. Ah yes, "Life in the fast lane" ...
