Northwest backtracks on air-fare increase
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Northwest Airlines Corp. today rescinded a 4 percent leisure fare increase on U.S. flights, reversing a surprising move yesterday in which the fourth-largest U.S. airline spurred an industrywide fare boost. The St. Paul, Minn.-based airline confirmed it has scrapped yesterday's increase but wouldn't comment further. Most major U.S. airlines increased fares on tickets purchased 7, 14 and 21 days in advance yesterday after Northwest initiated the boost. Analysts had expected this sixth attempt at increasing fares this year to hold, because Northwest was participating for the first time.
