Is it legal for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command at Pearl Harbor to sell Tupperware to raise money for its welfare and recreation association? Tupperware approved for
Navy fund-raising saleYes, said Don Rochon, spokesman for the 700-member Pacific division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The command had hoped to raise $1,000 for its morale, welfare and recreation fund, "but we are definitely short of that figure." He didn't know how much had been raised to date.
The money will be used to fund the command's Christmas party, to buy a microwave oven for its break room, and purchase floral arrangements for funeral services.
The sale was supposed to end July 31, but was extended once to Aug. 5, Rochon said. The fund is supposed to receive 40 percent of the money from Tupperware sales.
Rochon said Navy lawyers gave the agency the green light to proceed with the fund-raising event "because not one person was given a sales commission."
In the past the Navy agency has sold chili tickets, held bread sales and sold roses for Mother's Day to sponsor its welfare fund.
Can you explain what Zulu time, as used by the military, is?
As defined by the Dictionary of the Modern United States Military, Zulu time is a code term used internationally for the time at Greenwich, England. Greenwich Mean Time, or Zulu, is used as the reference standard for all the time zones around the world. Almost all military messages, including Emergency Action Messages, use Zulu time as their standard of reference. "Zulu," by the way, is the word used in the military phonetic alphabet for the letter "Z."
On the transfer of inmates to the mainland, the Star-Bulletin only listed a few names. Where is the list of the rest of the inmates?
Call the Halawa Correctional Facility at 486-2600 if you are interested in the status of a particular inmate. Of the 308 inmates transferred from Halawa Correctional Facility July 29, 180 inmates were sent to the 1,440-bed North Folk Correctional Facility in Sayre, Okla. The remaining 128 inmates are at the 2,016-bed Hardeman County Correctional Center in Whiteville, Tenn.
It will cost the state $44 a day to house the inmates in Oklahoma and Tennessee. There is a total of 900 Hawaii inmates, including 64 women, in prisons in Texas, Tennessee and Oklahoma.
To Goble's Flower Farm of Kula. I recently arranged with Goble's to send a floral arrangement to Florida, where my friend is dying of leukemia. Unfortunately, mainly because of the incompetence of the Florida deliverer, the flowers were totally spoiled by the time my friend got them. Mahalo
"It was distressing for all. But when I brought this to the attention of Goble's, they not only fully refunded my payment, but sent a duplicate gift to my friend. That is truly striving for customer satisfaction." -- J.W.
To Francine Egdamin, Aurelia Decas and Alfred "Pedong" Simbahon. They took time out from their hectic schedules to get my Bionaire air filters, helping to ease my chronic pain from pulmonary fibrosis (breathing is hard labor, especially when the weather is stuffy and hot). You all deserve a round of applause. -- Shirley Ann Mahalo
To the male driver of a car that tried to turn left from the third lane on Pensacola Street to Wilder Avenue on July 30. You stopped long enough, but not long enough to check for damages to my car or apologize for being so stupid. -- Edith Auwe!!!
