Auntie Esther Weaves
Lauhala Traditions

Photography by Ken Ige, Star-Bulletin

Auntie Esther Westmoreland, who learned to weave
lauhala in 1929, helps Galilee Chee, 18, with a bag she
is making. The weaving is one of several activities at
Kawaiahao Church. Others include Hawaiian quilting,
feather lei making and ukulele classes. Below is a closeup
of the weaving showing a lauhala stripper
and a roll of lauhala.
