Sweet harmonies

Hear 'Ale'a (sweet voiced) tonight at Jaron's in Kailua -- hot off the group's win Saturday at Ka Himeni Ana at Hawai'i Theatre.

'Ale'a captured first place and $1,000 in the contest for pre-World War II-era Hawaiian-language songs performed with traditional instruments and no microphones. Runners-up, in order, were Na Kama, Soundettes, Na Lehua, and Guava Jam.

'Ale'a features recent Kamehameha Schools graduates, from left in photo, Kale Hannahs, bass; Kala'i Stern, 8-string 'ukulele; Ryan Gonzalez on 4-string guitar and banjo; and Chad Takatsugi, 12-string guitar. They perform 8:30 to 11 p.m. every other Thursday at Jaron's.
