Play began today in the 30th annual Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament at three pools -- Iolani School, Kaimuki High School and Duke Kahanamoku. More than 100 teams from Hawaii, California, Washington state, Arizona, Nevada and Australia are competing.
HONORS TO FRASER, PARREIRA: Goalie Lila Fraser and utility player Denise Parreira of the University of Hawaii were named to the Mountain Pacific Federation Academic All-Conference women's water polo team.
Fraser, a communications major, had a 4.0 grade point average and Parreira, majoring in nutrition, was at 3.65 during their junior years.
HAWAII PONY TEAM HANGS TOUGH: Pitcher Dallas Defries capped a 4-for-4 effort at the plate with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Kalanianaole A.C. a 5-4 victory over Fountain Valley, Calif., yesterday that kept the Hawaii team alive in the double-elimination PONY Baseball Pony Division Western Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.

HAWAII WARRIORS FINISH STRONG: The Hawaii Warriors defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 8-6, yesterday to capture the consolation title in the AAU National Baseball Championship for 10-year-olds and under at Kansas City, Mo.
It was the seventh straight victory for the Warriors after a pair of setbacks at the start of the tournament.
SWINGING SENIORS: Don Andrews beat Norman DuPont, 6-2, 6-1, for the Men's 65 singles title and teamed with Hugh Findlay for a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dooley Kam and Fusao Fujimoto in the Men's 65 doubles final of the USTA/Pacific Section Senior Sectionals yesterday at Pearl Harbor's Wentworth Courts.
Andrews' son, Dave, downed Ray Badayos, 6-1, 6-0, for the Men's 35 singles championship. Kam defeated Jim Bartlett, 6-2, 6-1, in the Men's 70 singles final and Hattie Somerville beat Doris Hakman, 6-1, 6-4, for the Women's 60 singles crown.
ODKF GRANTS AWARDED: The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation has awarded athletic grants to four organizations and 12 individuals for the third quarter of this year.
A grant of $1,000 was given to Kama'aina Kids to conduct summer water sports activities, and to the Outrigger Canoe Club boys 16s volleyball team for travel to the USVBA junior national tournament in Texas. Grants of $500 went to Na Wahine O Ho'olehua, a all-women's canoe club for distance competition, and to the UnbeataBulls, a boys soccer team competing in the regionals in New Mexico.
Individuals receiving $500 grants were: kayaker Mahealani Lum; canoe paddler Victor Sherman; and volleyball player Corrie Machesky. Also to six members of the World Team traveling to Portugal: Melanie Bartels, Rachael Block; Lee-James Ha'o, Jessie Merle-Jones, Macy Mullen, and Stanton Suehiro; and to three surfers competing in the national amateur meet: Keala Naluai, Clayton Ventura and Jamie O'Brien.
