Ko Olina's Mark Chapleski shot a 68 to take a five-stroke lead going into today's second round of the AT&T Aloha Section PGA Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea golf course on the Big Island.

In an eight-way logjam for second place with 1-over-par 73s were defending champion Joe Root of Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani's Scott Bridges, Hapuna's Stefan Carlsmith, Huala-lai's John Freitas, Hilo Municipal's Kevin Hayashi, Kapalua's Dick McClean, Koele's Mark Orlowski and Kona Country Club's Mark Morrison.

Atop the senior division was Kerry Greenwood, whose 70 gave him a nine-stroke lead.

The 54-hole event ends tomorrow with the winner getting $2,600 plus $500 in AT&T air-time gift certificates.

HILO TEAM LEADS HIBT: Monty Brown reeled in a 359-pound marlin, one of just three catches on opening day, to send his Hilo Yacht Club team ahead in the 40th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament at Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.

Fishing on Force Play, skippered by Jim Patterson, Brown brought his marlin to gaff in just 32 minutes. That gave the Hilo team 579 points. The Mauna Kea Sports Fishing Club was awarded 300 points for a tag-and-release marlin caught by Takaaki Ushimura.

The only other trophy was a 165-pound ahi taken by Marilynn Mull of the Heeia Bay Anglers.

BACK-TO-BACK GEMS FOR KAPULE: Pomai Kapule tossed her second straight no-hitter of the tournament, striking out eight to lead Hawaii to a 4-1 win over Washington yesterday in Little League Softball's Big League (ages 16-18) Western Division playoffs at Portland, Ore.

Hawaii is the lone undefeated team in the tournament at 2-0 and will play the winner of today's Washington-Alaska game on Wednesday. If the Hawaii girls win at least one more game they will advance to Palmdale, Calif. for the Western Regionals.

Kapule's first no-hitter came against Alaska on Saturday. She struck out 14 in a 6-0 victory.

HAWAII AAU TEAM GOES DEEP: Jordan Tani's sixth-inning home run gave the Hawaii Warriors a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Stars in the National AAU Baseball Championships for 11-year-olds yesterday at Orlando, Fla.

Michael Kealoha also homered for Hawaii, which had dropped its first two games in pool play.

VOLLEYBALL CLINIC: Former University of Hawaii players Aaron Wilton, Rick Tune and Kai Kahele will be the featured coaches at a youth volleyball clinic Saturday at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

The clinic is open to 6-12-year-olds and runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost is $40. For more information, call Gavin Tseu at 531-6148.
