Sakamoto boats big
marlin in HIBT pro-am

A 550-pound Pacific blue marlin gave the Schuylkill River Billfish Club of Pennsylvania a commanding lead after the third day of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament pro-am at Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.

The Pacific blue was reeled in on 50-pound test line by popular local fishing show host Mike Sakamoto. It was worth 933 points and coupled with another 300 points for a tag-and-release marlin, the Schuylkill River Billfish Club had 1,233 points. Six teams are tied for second with 300.

HAWAII SURFERS ADVANCE: Kalani Robb and Ross Williams both won first-round matches and advanced to round three as the Op Pro surf meet got under way yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Hawaii's Andy Irons, Shane Dorian, Sunny Garcia, Kaipo Jaquias, Derek Ho, Shawn Sutton and John Shimooka all placed second or third in yesterday's heats and were seeded into today's second round.

On the women's side, Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo placed second and third, respectively, in their opening heat and were seeded into today's second round.

CLAY OFF TO GOOD START: Hawaii's Bryan Clay placed 10th overall after the first day of the decathlon competition at the USA Track and Field Olympics National Championships in Seattle with 3,202 points for five events.

Clay could have set a first-day record but he was disqualified in the 400-meter race for running on the lane line. Had his time counted, he would have had 3,965 points, the meet's highest first-day total ever.

HAWAII GIRLS SIXTH: Shayna Miyajima shot an 80 to help the Hawaii team hold on to sixth place at the Girls Junior America's Cup competition at Fresno, California, yesterday.

Hawaii was at 482 after the second round. Northern California was in first at 470.

Other second-round scores for the Hawaii team were Dawn Miyashiro's 82, Whitney Asao's 82 and Merynn Ito's 85.

In the boys' competition, Hawaii fell one place to seventh despite a 69 by James Seki Jr. The team was at 447, while Idaho lead with a 436.

Landon Chang shot a 75 and Jaime Matsumura and Kellen-Floyd Asao each had second-round 81s for Hawaii.

Seki's two-round total of 140 was the lowest of the tournament, a stroke better than Mexico's Guillermo Silva.

ALOHA SECTION STROKE PLAY: The Aloha Section PGA Stroke Play Championship will be held at the Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island from Sunday through Wednesday.

Joe Root, the Manua Kea Resort's Director of Golf, is the defending champion.

YONAMINE TESTIMONIAL: Friday is the deadline to make reservations for the 'A Celebration with Wally" testimonial for local sports great Wally Yonamine.

The event will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18, in the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. No-host cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

HAWAII SPLITS: Kazu Meyer's two-run home run helped Hawaii take a 7-6 victory over top-seeded Oklahoma as championship bracket play started at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association's World Series for 10-years and under yesterday at Cherokee, Iowa.

The Hawaii team then lost to Puerto Rico, 5-2, in the second game. Puerto Rico scored all its runs in the sixth and final inning.

Hawaii plays Ohio when the double elimination tournament continues today.

TENNIS PLAYERS TO AAUS: Three teams of 10 players each are representing Hawaii at this week's Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games at Hampton Roads, Va.

On the 14-under, 3.0-below team are: Valen Ahlo, Micah Castro, Jordon Kukino, Shariff Nassar, Kai Pestana, Serena Dameron, Fran Joson, Rena Kido, Kendra Pang and Minoaka Wood. On the 14-under, 3.5-above team are: Henry Athens, Carl Lam, Michael Mayeda, Sean Rodrigues, Clinton Zane, Britten Bailey, Chloe Bihag, Jessica Broadfoot, Marissa Machida and Kelly-Ann Nakamura.

The 18-under, 3.5-above team is comprised of Jason Bisanti, Kawena Dunn, Chris Farm, Lenn Nakama, Darren Okimoto, Caroline Beddow, Tierra Damas, Nicole Sakai, Julia Sandborn and Alissa Tokuoka.
