signify summerStar Markets offer green bell peppers at a produce best-buy price of $1.29 a pound, plus red or yellow peppers at $1.99 a pound. Foodland and Sack N Save also have Island Fresh green peppers for $1.39 to Maika'i Card holders.
Fill the bells with a mixture of lean ground beef or turkey, rice, Italian-style tomatoes, onion, ketch-up, spices and herbs, such as fresh or dried oregano. Add an island twist with garlic, grated fresh ginger and a dollop of oyster sauce.
Super Sweet white corn is a bargain at four ears for $1 for Maika'i Card holders. Also, bicolor corn is three for 99 cents, through Saturday, at Daiei; bicolor or white corn is three for $1 at Star; and white corn is 59 cents each to Safeway Club members.
Combine the bargain peppers and corn with Spanish or Maui onion for a fresh, tangy salsa to go with grilled shrimp or fish. You'll need four to five ears of corn, 1/4 cup diced red and green peppers, 1/4 cup of chopped onion, juice from 1 lime, salt and pepper. Cut the kernels from the ears and blanch them in lightly salted water. Drain. While corn is still warm, combine with peppers and onions and drizzle the lime juice over all. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Mix and chill. Low fat, high flavor.Other good buys this week include nectarines for 69 cents a pound and fresh-caught tombo ahi fillet for $3.97 to Maika'i Card holders; Island Fresh watermelon for 19 cents at Times and to Safeway Club members; and at Daiei, apple or Williams bananas for 78 cents a pound and, through Saturday, Maui onions for 78 cents.
