a winning roundHE may have been just a sidekick to Steve McGarrett in "Hawaii Five-O," but Jim MacArthur was the main man in the clubhouse following a charity golf tourney the other day. He fired a hole-in-one, but wouldn't you know it? It wasn't on one of the holes where he would have won a car! Still, the winner traditionally buys a round after carding an ace. Obviously, being married to a former golf pro (H.B. Duntz, as she was then known) didn't hurt his game any. Buy 'em, Danno ... And let me say before the Star-Bulletin's resident Korean golfer Bill Kwon does in his sports column, the women of Korea are making a name for themselves on the links these days. First Se Ri Pak starts winning everything in sight, including yesterday's Giant Eagle LPGA Classic in Ohio, and now comes along another Korean woman, Pearl Sinn, who came on strong yesterday and finished tied for fourth. The two should have a natural following in Hawaii. It is, after all, where Sinn-Pak headquarters is located ...
ASK barkeep Jerry Boyce of the Chart House what's the latest skinny there, and you get a hearty guffaw. There was a mob scene there Friday night, thanks to the appearance of three people to whom "skinny" means they've scraped their patella. Salevaa Atisanoe, who until his retirement was known worldwide as Konishiki, and fellow sumotori Yokozuna Akebono and Musashimaru, dropped by the Chart House following Sale's official retirement party at the Sheraton-Waikiki. Of course after that big hotel dinner, they'd have no appetite right? Yeah, right! They're replenishing the stock at the Chart House this week ...

FOR the most part, the University of Hawaii is getting some well-deserved publicity for its cloning around. The micing of America is actually the fourth thing in recent months which has brought recognition to UH. Media coverage of the UH's participation in the international nutrino research project, the discovery of a new asteroid by UH astronomers and undersea mapping techniques developed by UH researchers have also highlighted the quality of work at UH, where the school's current TV campaign slogan is "Share the Pride." Of course we also have to share the jokes from Jay Leno and David Letterman about how cloning mice means there'll never be another hot dog shortage in New York. When Letterman mentioned the experiments at UH, he sneered and tossed off a nasty quip: "That's a hotbed of scientific research, ain't it?" Well, Dave, as a matter of fact, yes it is! ...MEANWHILE, the East-West Center is not to be left out of things. Soon-Kwon Kim of South Korea, recipient of the EWC's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988, is getting praise for his efforts to help North Korea's famine-stricken populace. He was singled out by the Economist of Great Britain for identifying the problem and working toward implementing a solution to it ...

YOU can imagine the surprise on the face of a browser at Celebrites, the Lahaina gallery which features artworks by people famous for something other than their art. Looking at a painting by Jeff Bridges, she found herself standing next to the actor himself. Bridges, who is a painter of some accomplishment, has been vacationing in Maui and dropped into Gerard and Colleen Marti's gallery to check out his work alongside that of people like Sylvester Stallone, Anthony Quinn and Charles Bronson ...
