Klaneski to play
for Hurricanes

Former University of Hawaii All-WAC defensive back Eddie Klaneski has signed with the Honolulu Hurricanes of the Professional Indoor Football League and will play in Saturday's game against the Utah Catzz at Blaisdell Arena.

The visitors feature several players with Hawaii ties, including former Farrington High player Vince Tauanuu, Toele Faamoe from Kahuku and the Big Island's Junior Toagoloa. The Hurricanes are 5-6 while the Catzz are 5-7. Game time is 7 p.m. There will also be a pregame concert and a youth football clinic at halftime for kids 12-and-under.

PAC RIM OPENS: The Pac Rim Junior Volleyball Tournament opened four days of play today at Klum Gym on the University of Hawaii campus.

Competing in the women's division are Hawaii, Taiwan, Canada and the Oahu All-Stars. The 20-and-under men's teams are from Hawaii, California, Canada, and the Oahu All-Stars.

The Hawaii teams feature some of the islands' top high school and collegiate players including Lindsey Berg, Tehani Miyashiro, Clay Stanley and Scott Wong. The all-star teams are comprised of former and current collegiate players, including Robyn Ah Mow, Therese Crawford, Heidi Ilustre, Aaron Wilton, Rick Tune and Jason Salmeri.

Tickets are $5 daily, $15 for an all-tournament pass. Matches are at 2, 4, 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The women's championship match is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the men's final at 7:30 p.m. For information, call Pono Ma'a at 942-8148.

OKADA MOVES UP: Maui's Jean Okada is ranked 114th in the world in doubles tennis after her performance in last weekend's A&P Classic/USTA Challenger at Mahwah, N.J.

Okada and partner Jane Chi finished second in the tournament. Okada, of Lahaina, is also ranked No. 290 in singles.

MOVERS LOSE: Andrew Huling's RBI double highlighted a two-run fourth inning as the Mat-Su Miners pulled away from the Hawaii Island Movers, 4-1, last night in an Alaska Summer League baseball game at Rainbow Stadium.

The Movers trailed 2-0 before getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Derek Honma doubled to score Billy Jacobson.

Tim Kalita struck out 10 and limited the Movers to four hits in a complete-game victory. The teams continue their series with a 6 p.m. game tonight.

OKAMURA WAY BACK: At Lake Forest, Ill., Garrett Okamura of Wailuku, Maui, was tied for 77th place going into today's second round of the U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship.

Okamura carded a 12-over par 83, 14 strokes behind leaders Aaron Baddeley of Australia. After three weather delays, play was suspended yesterday because of darkness with 43 players still on the course.

The field will be cut to the low 64 for match play after the conclusion of the second round.

SOCCER TOURNAMENT OPENS: Forty teams from Hawaii and the Pacific Rim opened play today in the Hawaii International Cup at Kapiolani Park.

The third annual tournament features boys and girls teams in under-8 to under-19 age groups representing Hawaii, Taiwan and California. The event concludes with championship matches Saturday.
