golf hope eliminated

Jim Seki Jr. of Honolulu, the last hope for Hawaii in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Golf Championship at San Diego, was eliminated, 3 and 1, by Adrian Quintela of El Paso, Texas, in the second round of match play yesterday.

IRWIN TO DEFEND TITLE: Defending champion Hale Irwin will head a field of 78 leading Senior PGA Tour pros for the EMC2 Kaanapali Classic Oct. 18-25 at the Kaanapali North Course.

Also scheduled to play in the 54-hole event are three-time winner Bob Charles and 1993 champion George Archer.

The tournament will be televised on ESPN.

ISLAND MOVERS WIN: Derek Honma drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the ninth inning, giving the Hawaii Island Movers a 2-1 Alaska Baseball League victory over the Alaska Goldpanners last night at Rainbow Stadium.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Danny Kimura and Scooter Martines singled and Gregg Omori walked, filling the bases.

After pinch-hitter Mike Waugh grounded into a force at the plate, Goldpanners reliever Jeremy Cook walked Honma, sending Martines home with the winning run.

BAILEY A LION: The British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League have signed former University of Oregon and St. Louis School defensive lineman Troy Bailey.

Bailey played left defensive end for the Ducks in the 1995 Cotton Bowl Classic against Colorado.

CHESS DUELS IN WAIKIKI: Grandmasters from around the world, including U.S. champion Joel "Deep Blue" Benjamin and Australian champ Ian Rogers, will compete next week in the Saitek U.S. Masters Chess Tournament at the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel in Waikiki.

Starting Tuesday at 5 p.m., more than 60 players from 20 countries will vie for $15,000 in prizes.

Hikaru Nakamura of New York, at age 10 the youngest chess master in U.S. history, also is entered.

The event is part of the 1998 Hawaii International Chess Festival, which also includes the Cardoza U.S. Open in Kona Aug. 1-9.

KOMODA, VILLAMOR DRIVE ON: Derek Komoda and Robin Villamor of Mililani recently won the Hawaii state championships for drivers of four- and three-axle tractor-semitrailers, respectively, qualifying for the National Truck Driving Championships Aug. 12-15 at Long Beach, Calif.

FUND-RAISING TOURNEY: The 10th annual AT&T/Pilot Tennis Championships will be held July 24-26 at the Hickam Air Force Base Tennis Center, with men's and women's singles and doubles competition in classes 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and a wheelchair tournament.

The Pilot Club of Downtown Honolulu co-sponsors the tournament, which raises funds for local charities such as Hawaii Special Olympics, Winners at Work, Alzheimer's Association and the Special Education Center of Hawaii.

Entry forms, available at tennis courts or by calling 942-4477, must be received by July 15.

UH-HILO SOFTBALL BENEFIT SHOW: A collectibles and Sportscard Show and a silent auction to benefit the University of Hawaii at Hilo softball program will be held July 25 at the Maui Prince Hotel.

The show will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with results of the auction announced at 4:30 p.m.

'HEY, COACH!' TRAINING SESSIONS: Volunteers are being sought by PREVENT Child Abuse Hawaii to become program facilitators for its "Hey, Coach!" program, which provides coaches with information on the use of positive coaching techniques while working with youth in athletics.

Facilitator training sessions will be held at the PREVENT office at 1575 S. Beretania St., Suite 202, on July 25 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and July 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Those who attend one of the meetings can become program facilitators.

LONG DRIVE QUALIFYING: Hawaii golfers may try to qualify on July 27 (local) and Sept. 11 (district) at the Turtle Bay Country Club for the World Long Drive Championship, to be held Oct. 21-24 in Mesquite, Nev.

Qualifying will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Up to six golfers in each division (open, senior) advance from the local to the district event. Cost is $30 for six golf balls.

PADDLEBOARD DISTANCE RACE: The second Quiksilver Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race is scheduled for Aug. 2, starting at 8 a.m. from the Kalua Koi Hotel and finishing at Mauanalua Bay Beach Park.

Contestants on 12-foot stock paddleboards or open class boards over 12 feet long will race the 32-mile distance in four men's divisions and one women's division.

MAUI WOMEN'S GOLF: The 44th Maui Women's Invitational golf tournament will be held Aug. 1-2. The first round will be held at the Kaanapali North Course, and Sunday's final at the Maui Country Club.

Entries will be limited to the first 80 golfers. The tournament -- with four flights -- is open to all women 18 years of age or older with a USGA July slope index of 33.2 or less.
