Rookie Maumau
signs with Panthers

From staff and wire reports

Tapa

Viliami Maumau of Hawaii, a former star at St. Louis, signed with the Carolina Panthers yesterday.

Maumau, a nose tackle, was a seventh-round draft choice out of the University of Colorado.

Former University of Washington center Olin Kreutz, also a former Crusader, said last night that his agent, Mark Bartelstein, began negotiations earlier this week with the Chicago Bears.

Kreutz, who is scheduled to leave for Bears training camp on Saturday, said he is anxious for matters to be settled in time for him to begin camp with his teammates.

As of last night, the sides were still not close to a deal.
