Hawaiian Airlines traffic up 1.5 percent in June
Hawaiian Airlines Inc. said it carried 455,253 passengers in June, a 1.5 percent increase from 448,417 in June 1997.The airline said it had more capacity, a 3.7 percent increase to 466.9 million available seat miles from 450.1 million in the previous June.
The result was a load factor of 83.4 percent last month in its entire system, which includes mainland-Hawaii and Hawaii-South Pacific services as well as interisland flights.
That was a decrease from 86 percent in June 1997.
Local partnership buys Hotel Molokai
A local partnership has acquired the 37-room Hotel Molokai from Molokai Beach Ltd. for an undisclosed price.Keawe Lake Group LLC, planned to open the hotel's bar today but said it will keep the hotel itself closed for a time for renovations.
The purchase includes the A-frame hotel units, a restaurant, the bar and the 2.5-acre fee simple site on Molokai's South Shore.
The buyer group is led by longtime island hotelier Kimo M. Keawe and Jerry Johnson, owner of Churchill Swim Fins and part-time Molokai resident.
Boyd Gaming, Mirage settle casino dispute
LAS VEGAS -- Boyd Gaming Corp. said it has rejoined its joint venture with Mirage Resorts Inc. to develop a $750 million casino resort in Atlantic City, N.J.Mirage, the U.S.'s third-largest casino company, had canceled the joint venture with Boyd and Circus Circus Enterprises Inc. six months ago saying it wanted its partners to bear more of the cost for their three-casino development. Boyd, which owns 12 casinos including the Stardust on the Las Vegas strip, sued Mirage two weeks later.
Ford profits up 6.7%; exceeds estimates
DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford Motor Co.'s second-quarter profit rose 6.7 percent, topping estimates, as strong sales of high-profit vehicles in North America and aggressive cost-cutting helped the company set a quarterly record for its automobile earnings. The world's second-largest automaker earned $2.38 billion, or $1.91 a diluted share, up from $2.23 billion, or $1.82 a share from a year ago.
