GARCIA, JAQUIAS, ABUBO WIN: Hawaii surfers Sunny Garcia and Kaipo Jaquias advanced to a men's quarterfinal showdown today in the Billa-bong/MSF Pro meet at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa with victories yesterday while Megan Abubo of Hawaii eliminated four-time women's world champion Lisa Andrews to gain a semifinal berth.
HARRIS, LEIATO LIFT GOLD: Anthony Harris of Kaneohe and Tony Leiato of Honolulu won weight-class titles in the USA Powerlifting Senior National Championships last weekend at Denver and will represent the U.S. in the November IPF Senior World Championships in the Ukraine.
Harris had a three-lift (squat, bench press, dead lift) total of 1,958 pounds to win the 220-pound crown and Leiato totaled 2,121 pounds to take 275-pound honors.
Quincy Guzman of Honolulu placed fourth in the 181-pound weight class with a personal best-total of 1,603 pounds. Nando Corpuz was sixth in the 148-pound competition with a 1,350-pound total.
300 GAME FOR SHINSATO: The American Bowling Congress has approved a 300 game rolled by Fred Shinsato of Waipahu in the Hui Na Alii Seniors League at Leeward Bowl on May 12.
