Call it simply public-access TV, or call it 'Olelo, the Corporation for Community Television, but the cable-TV channels have been a proving ground for budding videophiles. Shows that have aired on 'Olelo during the last year were also eligible for annual National Hometown Video Festi-val, which begins tonight. Winning Olelo
programs air todayOf eight Hawaii shows entered by 'Olelo, three won and two were finalists, not bad considering this year's competition had more than 2000 entries in 44 categories.
In Hawaii, the finalists and winners will air the same night as the awards ceremony on the mainland.
"This is the first year we've actually organized the event to tie-in," said 'Olelo promotions coordinator Danny Marich. "We really encouraged our people to enter, and they did well."
The "quality of the shows is quite good," said Marich, "particularly those that have doing it for a number of years. It's a whole new level of expertise that isn't amateur at all."
