vertical fishBACK from the Culinary Institute of America in New York are Hawaii Ocean Resources Marine Programs Specialist Howard Deese and chef Roy Yamaguchi. They were a big hit there, drawing record crowds of students and staff to attend their "Vertical Fish Tasting." They're not fooling me, however -- I'm sure most of those attending wanted to know how he got the fish to stand vertically. Deese presents his piscatorial promotion again 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sea Life Park, a more casual version he calls a "Sidewalk Fish Tasting" -- don't ask! The public can test their prowess by tasting 10 varieties of fish in a format similar to a wine tasting. The following weekend, Deese will attend the Kapalua Wine & Food Symposium and prepare a luncheon he's themed, "If You Can't Be With the Fish You Love, Love the Fish You're With." ...
SPEAKING of food, Scruples owner Fred Piluso and companion Kadri Pari flew to L.A. to guest on pal Larry Manetti's new TV cooking show. They were joined by other Manetti cronies Tom Selleck, Robert Wagner and Mike Connors. They spent two hours taping the thing, which Piluso describes as a "Boys Talk Show," full of yuks and very much like a roast. But they edited the show down to an hour, at the conclusion of which Manetti managed to whip up a delicious linguine with clam sauce. Piluso also got together with former Hawaii resident Tony Curtis and they dined with one of Piluso's favorites, Tony Bennett, whom oddly enough he'd never met before ...
Don't mess with Bill
YOU'D think Bill Wyland would have enough on his plate looking after the art empire he launched based on brother Wyland's art -- whales and the like. It's grown from one gallery in Haleiwa a decade ago, when Bill was the sole employee working seven days a week, to 17 galleries and shops with 170 employees. But Bill keeps branching out into other ventures. He plans to open the first of 50 Living Seas Cafes in the proposed Galleria, if that complex to be located in the downtown post office ever comes to fruition. It would feature an underwater theme -- guess whose artwork on the walls -- and Pacific Rim cuisine. Wyland also has formed a company called Electric Islands International to bring electric vehicles to Hawaii. And since he's something of a cigar aficionado himself, he's creating his own label of cigars, and even hired some Cuban people to roll them, hoping to debut the stogies next month ... And coming out with a Kauai cigar, though not made with isle tobacco, is Ed Kaahea, formerly of Booga Booga ...SUCCESS Dynamics honcho Ron Martin says his recent mainland speaking tour was a "Riches to Rags" adventure. He spoke to 160 Waldenbook execs in Reno one day, and the next day visited the San Francisco City Store to speak to their employees, who turned out to be five homeless people ...
Gunning for posterity
WITH a gun for an arm, it's a safe bet that Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway is headed for the Hall of Fame. So when Broncos owner Pat Bowlen spots a better gun than Elway's, that's news. And so it was when Bowlen walked the decks of the "Mighty Mo" this week and admired its nine 16-inch guns, each of which can fire a 2,700-pound shell up to 23 miles with as much accuracy as Elway. And just as Elway depends on a guard to protect him, so, too, did Bowlen. Localite Tim Guard, a board member of both the USS Missouri Memorial Association and the Broncos, accompanied Bowlen on his tour, along with memorial president Roy Yee ...
