Everything’s
turning out peachy

Plenty of peaches -- that's what we've got in the produce bins this week, starting with white peaches at Daiei for $1.58 a pound, through Saturday.

Pick peaches that have a flowery scent and store them at room temperature. They are good sources of vitamin A, potassium and dietary fiber.

Other good buys for pit fruits: white nectarines for $2.49 a pound at Star Markets; and nectarines for 69 cents at Safeway and, through Saturday, 98 cents at Daiei. Also, yellow peaches for 89 cents at Star; and yellow peaches and nectarines, and red and black plums all for 99 cents at Times.

Parlay the pit fruits into refreshing summer salsas, smoothies and meat glazes.

More fruit best-buys include Bing cherries for $1.39 a pound to Maika'i Card holders at Foodland and Sack N Save, apple bananas for 78 cents at Daiei, and cantaloupe for 39 cents a pound at Star.

Head cabbage tops Island Fresh produce at 29 cents a pound to Safeway Club members, followed by green bell peppers for $1.19 to Safeway Club members or $1.29 to Foodland and Sack N Save Maika'i Card holders.

Other Island Fresh veggies to Maika'i members are string beans for $1.99 a pound and green onions for 69 cents a bunch.

To marry fruits and cheeses, pair peaches with creamy cow's milk and mild goat's milk cheeses; nectarines with creamy, aged cow's milk cheeses; and plums with hard, sheep's milk cheese and blue cheeses.
