Seafood fest at Sea Life Park

This weekend's Sea Life Park Seafood Festival features a seven-course dinner, fish-bones cookoff, and seafood tastings in "A Taste of Honolulu" format. The dinner is 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, with a drawing for a San Francisco trip and 49ers game for two; $85 with proceeds to River of Life Mission and Kapiolani Community College's Culinary Institute of the Pacific. Tomorrow is the entry deadline for the unique cookoff, set 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday for pros, culinary students and amateurs. Get official entry forms at the State Ocean Resources Branch, 235 S. Beretania St., Room 503. Call 587-2685 or 587-2689.

Gordon Lum and six other chefs host Sunday's Seafood Festival from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kamaaina park admission is $8 adults, $6 children; then buy scrip for tastings. Call 973-9825.

Caterer, cookbook writer
discusses her career

Merry White, caterer, restaurant reviewer and cookbook writer, shares some memorable moments in a free lecture titled "Confessions of a Closet Caterer: My Secret Life in Food," 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall. White tells how Julia Child rescued her, how she cooked for Jackie Kennedy Onassis on a two-burner hot plate, and how she got into the cookbook business. bullet Chili lovers: Chili, entertainment and games highlight the Kona Elks Lodge and the Hawaii Restaurant Association's 13th Annual Chili Cook-off, 11 a.m. Saturday at the Coconut Grove Marketplace Shopping Plaza in Kailua-Kona. Chili lovers can see which teams will win for the best chili, best booth and best jingle. Admission: $2, children ages 5-12; and $6, adults. Chili teams are still welcomed to participate. bullet Cuisine from Hotel Bel-Air: Gary Clauson, executive chef and director of food and beverage for the Hotel Bel-Air, brings his talents to The Lodge at Koele on Lanai, Saturday and Sunday. Clauson will join Executive Chef Edwin Goto from The Lodge at Koele, 6 p.m. both days, to prepare a French-California style feast. Clauson will also present a free cooking class, 3:30 p.m. Sunday. bullet Porter wines and dines: Vintner Bernard Porter hosts an evening of award-winning cuisine complemented with wines from Clos Du Val, 7:30 p.m. July 15 at Longhi's in Lahaina. For $65, guests will sample six different wines while dining on Peking duck rolls with scallion pancakes, cold poached salmon, filet mignon with wild mushrooms cabernet sauce, assorted cheeses and dessert.
