Makakilo brush fire forces residents out
Firefighters resumed their battle today against a Makakilo brush fire that forced some residents from their homes yesterday.Helicopters joined the fight at daybreak after seven companies and two tankers monitored the situation overnight.
Smoke from the fire, which started at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday, drove some area residents from their homes, officials said. It was not known how many people left in the voluntary evacuation.
Only a handful of residents, however, came to a shelter opened at the Makakilo Community Center by Oahu Civil Defense and the Hawaii Chapter of American Red Cross shortly after midnight.
"Others with families elsewhere may have gone there," said Kenna Sommers of the Red Cross. "The smoke is really bad in some areas here."
Honokai Hale residents living downwind of the fire were affected by the smoke.
The fire was not posing an immediate threat to property, although there were reports that it came to within 75 yards of some homes, firefighters said.
Some neighbors blamed fireworks for igniting the fire, but fire officials didn't confirm those reports.
