Have a berry merry Fourth of July with a patriotic parfait in red, white and blue. Treat yourself to a
basket full of berriesLayer blueberries and strawberries, raspberries or red currants with whipped cream or ice cream to create a dessert that will chill the summer heat after your barbeque or picnic on Independence Day.
Foodland and Sack N Save this week are featuring a bevy of berries at prices that won't put too much of a dent in your pocketbook. Strawberries are going for $2.49 a pound, blueberries for $2.39 for 12 ounces; the more exotics -- raspberries, red currants, gooseberries and loganberries -- are $2.39 for 6 ounces (all Maika'i prices).
Choose berries that have good color and are firm and plump. Avoid any with bruises. If need be ask one of the produce handlers at the market to open the clamshell packaging to check for fuzz which indicates berries past their prime.
Refrigerate the berries covered and unwashed, but don't press or crowd them. When you're ready to eat them, pick through the fruit and remove any stems. Rinse them gently in cold water and drain well.
If corn is what you're ono for, Star is featuring three ears for $1, while Foodland and Sack N Save are pricing three ears at 99 cents and Safeway has them for 69 cents each.
And what would the Fourth be without watermelon? Take your pick: Star and Foodland have watermelon for 19 cents a pound and Safeway for 13 cents a pound.
Cabbage is also a good buy this week: 59 cents a pound at Times, 29 cents at Safeway, 33 cents at Daiei, 49 cents at Star.
