State warns residents on Cayman solicitations

State officials are warning residents about an increase in solicitations being made for investments in the Cayman Islands.

Many of the current solicitations, offering returns of 8 percent or more per week, look like classic pyramid, or "Ponzi", schemes, according to the state securities enforcement unit of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. The operators of such schemes make no real investment but make the offers look good by using some of the money from new investors to make payments to the earlier ones, the state said.

Teamsters to represent drivers on TV-ad shoots

HOLLYWOOD -- After two years of trying, the Teamsters last week signed an agreement with the Association of Independent Commercial Producers covering commercial productions in California, Nevada and Hawaii.

The four-year pact, which goes into effect tomorrow, covers drivers of trucks and other equipment such as cranes, insert cars, honey wagons and specialty picture vehicles, the trade magazine Daily Variety reported today.

"It's historic," said Tom Marchetti of Los Angeles-based Teamsters Local 399, which represents about 3,500 drivers. "The commercial drivers have been nonunion since day one. We're thrilled to death. We're here to put our members to work."

"Any member of the association who films in California, Nevada or Hawaii who doesn't sign up through their association is subject to a picket line," he said.

Delta, United team up on frequent-flyer plans

ATLANTA -- Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's No. 3 airline, and UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, the nation's largest carrier, agreed to combine frequent-flyer programs.

Under the agreement, United, based in Elk Grove Township, Ill., will become a partner in Delta's SkyMiles Program, beginning Sept. 1, the airlines said today.

Delta frequent-flyers will be able to chalk up miles in their SkyMiles accounts when flying on United's domestic U.S. route network, the airlines said. Delta, based in Atlanta, also will join United's MileagePlus program.
