Dean Wilson won his second consecutive Kauai Open title yesterday with a final-round 67 for a 3-under-par 213 total at the Kauai Lagoons Kiele Golf Course.

Wilson beat runner-up Lance Suzuki, a five-time winner of the event, by two strokes. Suzuki had led after the first and second rounds and finished with a 72--215.

Wilson overtook Suzuki on yesterday's 15th hole. Leading by a stroke, Suzuki hit his second shot out of bounds on the par-4 hole, and ended with a 7. Wilson parred the hole, then birdied Nos. 16 and 17.

David Ishii was third after shooting a final-round 70 for a three-day total of 217.

FIRSTS FOR VARELA, RESSING: Gustavo Varela continued his dominance of local road races yesterday by setting a course record in the fifth annual Run for the Rain Forest 5K yesterday in Manoa.

Varela's record time of 15 minutes, 5 seconds, beat Jonathan Lyau, 15:41, who had set the previous course record in winning the event last year, in 15:44.

Varela also won the Ford Island 10K and the Honolulu Symphony Fun Run this year. He was the top Hawaii finisher and fourth overall in the Great Aloha Run.

Mareike Ressing was the women's winner in 17:2=34. Rachel Graybill was second in 18:10.

FRITZ, MAGRUDER WIN: Kirk Fritz took the men's title and Tomoko Magruder was the women's winner at the Ford Island run-bike-run yesterday.

YACHTS START: The first 33 of 74 yachts in the biennial West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe started yesterday.

The rest of the field will start over the next three days. The staggered start is designed to compress the finish of the race into a few days.

The race record, set by Page in 1996, is seven days, 22 hours and one minute.
