Helping others is his goal

Kelly Marcus is a remarkably responsible kid. Besides caring for a menagerie of animals -- including a dog, mouse, four birds and two chickens raised from eggs -- the 11-year-old Hauula boy regularly baby-sits three younger siblings.

From helping with their homework to just keeping them busy, Marcus said his goal is to make his siblings happy. Occasionally he helps to feed them, preparing his specialty: saimin. "I can't really cook," he said. "Grandma does most of the cooking."

Marcus spends free moments doing pencil drawings, a skill learned when he was 7 from his father. Marcus said he hopes to extend his range to include paintings and sculptures. He stressed, however, that art is a hobby, as he intends to pursue medicine as a career.

To attain this goal, Marcus steadfastly maintains straight A's by studying an extra two hours daily at the local library and learning to speed-read. He hopes his academic excellence will eventually lead to a scholarship at "the best college for medicine."

For now, Marcus is focused on making the school track team and winning the Student Council presidency. If elected, he promises more plants on campus and more school dances. A stint at Kamehameha Schools also may be in his future. "I want to learn (about) my Hawaiian culture," he said.

Teacher David Okouchi has no doubt that Marcus will be successful, emphasizing that Marcus is a go-getter who "takes genuine pride in all he does."
