LIHUE -- A salvage team will try again today to recover the wreckage from the Ohana helicopter that crashed near Waialeale Crater Thursday. Hopes high to recover
By Trish Moore, Star-Bulletin
Kauai copter wreckage"Hopefully, the tradewinds have started dying down and some of this precipitation blows through," said chopper pilot Ken D'Attilio this morning.
Thick clouds and high winds prevented the recovery helicopter from flying close to the remote crash site the last two days.
Workers on Saturday gathered much of the debris strewn along the hillside and prepared it to be airlifted out of the area, D'Attilio said.
All six people aboard the A-Star 350BA helicopter were killed when it crashed into the a hillside in Kauai's central mountains.
They were nearing the end of a routine 55-minute tour around the island Thursday morning.
The remoteness of the site, as well as poor visibility, made it difficult for searchers to find the crash site.
Three of the bodies were recovered on Friday, the others on Saturday.
Family members on Saturday identified the bodies of John Sipin, 39, Maxine Sipin, 42, and Pauline Muse, 50.
Friday, relatives identified the bodies of pilot Chuck Lowe, Rebecca Muse, 9, and Andrew Yang, 10.
Red Cross disaster counselors and Kauai Hospice workers supported family members throughout the weekend and helped make arrangements to transport the bodies home.
The families are leaving, said Red Cross spokesman Russell Fujita.
