Event honoring top QBs
may be Honolulu-bound

An annual charity fund-raising dinner that each year honors the top football quarterbacks at the high school, collegiate and professional levels is considering whether to make Honolulu or Jacksonville, Fla., its permanent home.

Bob Geoghan of Rockville, Md., the founder and president of the National Quarterback Club, which sponsors the awards dinner, said some local boosters were exploring the possibility of tying the event to festivities leading up to the Pro Bowl.

A local board would determine which charities would be assisted by the annual dinner, which was first held in 1985 and which in recent years has been held in several different locations, Geoghan said. The event usually draws between 15 to 25 NFL quarterbacks.

TWO HAWAII FIGHTERS IN FINALS: Samson Guillermo of Waianae and Donaldo Holguin of Kakaako advanced to tomorrow's finals of the Junior Olympic National Boxing championships with victories yesterday at Marquette, Mich.

Guillermo, fighting at 112 pounds, defeated Allen Litzau of Minnesota. Holguin, at 132, beat Dmitry Solita from New York.

Waianae's J.J. Rodriguez, at 85 pounds, lost his semifinal match to Mark DeShields from Pennsylvania.

The tournament includes the top 15- and 16-year-olds in the nation. The gold medal winners advance as members of Team USA to the world championships July 4-11 in Tijuana, Mexico.
