"Surfer Boy": By Gael Mustapha, $4.95, 109 pages, Island Heritage Publishing
Keoni, a 15-year-old haole boy, likes a Samoan girl and decides he would rather be Samoan than haole. Part of the publishing company's "Adventures in Hawaii Series" for teens.
Mustapha has retired from Hawaii's Department of Education and is currently living in Arizona.
"The Beach": By Lena Lencek and Gideon Bosker, $25.95, 286 pages, Penguin Group
A history of nature's paradise and its role in society. Lencek and Bosker discuss Hollywood's relationship with the beach as depicted in such films as "From Here to Eternity" and "Blue Hawaii." The volume also covers Hawaii's great surf and the "counterculture" that congregated on the beaches of Hawaii, California, Mexico and Morocco. Illustrated with several black-and-white pictures and photographs.
"Bulletproof Buddhists and Other Essays": By Frank Chin, $42, 429 pages, University of Hawaii Press
This collection of six of Chin's best essays spans 40 years. One essay tells of Chin being arrested as an American spy, and another tells of Chin's discovery of the Chinese bachelor society along the California-Mexico border. All the essays tell what it is like to be a Chinese American.
"Glass Beach": Bu Jill Marie Landis, $6.99, 355 pages, softbound, The Berkley Publishing Group
After the death of her cruel husband, Elizabeth Bennett and her daughter finally are able to enjoy their Hawaiian estate. A stranger appears, claiming he has the right to run their estate. Bennett is filled with rage and passion for this stranger, who is her deceased husband's illegitimate son.
