Plucky paddler completes
72-mile Maui-Oahu solo run

Donna "Kahi" Kahakui completed a 72-mile Kai Makana solo canoe paddle from Maui to Oahu last Saturday after 19 hours and 40 minutes of near-constant paddling.

Kahakui, one of two Hawaii spokespersons for the national "Year of the Ocean" campaign, made the exhausting voyage in an effort to raise awareness of ocean environmental issues. She started from Kapalua Bay, Maui at 5:34 p.m. Friday and arrived at the Hilton Hawaiian Village at 12:41.40 p.m. Saturday.

HAWAII IN NATIONALS: The Asics/Rainbow Volleyball Club's 16-and-under girls' team will compete in the U.S. Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships June 26-30 at Dallas.

Team members, coached by Charlie Wade, are Casey Castillo, Ku'ulei Kamanao, Nohea Tano, Rosalyn Dang, Hauoli Ho'opii, Ka'ala Lo, Janelle Jeramiah, Keri Tomomitsu and Pi'ikea Dudoit.
