Wakanohana was promoted from ozeki (champion) after winning two consecutive tournaments, with a 14-1 record in March and a 12-3 record in May. In all, he has won five tournaments.
"As always, I will try to work hard to the end without giving up," Wakanohana said.
The two are the first brothers to hold the traditional sport's top rank at the same time.

GAMES MIGHT HAVE WORLD RECORD: Erwin Jaskulski, 95, ran the 100-meter dash in 24.81 seconds June 13 at the Aloha State Games track and field meet at Kaiser High. His time will be submitted as a wind-aided world record for the 95-99 age group as recognized by the World Association of Veteran Athletes, meet director Jack Karbens said last night.
Karbens said Jaskulski's time also will be submitted to USA Track and Field for recognition as an American record.
The current world record in the 95-99 age group is held by Kazuhiko Tsutsumi of Japan with a time of 38.82.
MACDONALD 14TH: Punahou junior Eri Macdonald, who last weekend ran the fastest 800 meters ever posted by a Hawaii prep runner, finished 14th Saturday at the National Scholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships at North Carolina State University.
Macdonald's 2:14:54 finish put her far behind the nation's top 800-meter runner, Placer High junior Lindsay Hyatt of Auburn, Calif., who won the NSO title in 2:09.10.
At the Golden West Invitational in Sacramento on June 13, Macdonald finished third to Hyatt in 2:09.95. In late March, she ran 2:10.30 to place second to Hyatt in a Northern California meet. At the time, Macdonald had the second fastest time in the nation among female prep 800 runners.
Coming into the NSO, Macdonald was ranked No. 4 in the nation.
Macdonald is the Hawaii state meet champion and record holder in the 800.
MOLOKAI-OAHU PADDLEBOARD RACE: The second Quiksilver Molokai-to-Oahu Paddleboard race is scheduled for Aug. 2.
The 32-mile event begins at 8 a.m. off the Kaluakoi Hotel and finishes at Maunalua Bay Beach Park. Divisions are: men's open and stock, masters open and stock, women's open and stock, and 2-man team age 80-and-over and 2-man team age 79-and-under.
A cash award of $1,000 goes to the first finisher, $500 for the first individual stock board, and $300 for the first team to finish. Boards can either be 12-foot stock or open class (over 12 feet).
The entry fee is $80 per individual and $160 per team.
