Lanai seats great
for Mo sightingTODAY'S paper is full of coverage of the USS Missouri arrival and the U.S. Open golf tourney, so I won't belabor either event. But it was nice having a lanai from which to watch the Big Mo's arrival off Waikiki and Ala Moana Beach -- it was something worthy of a network TV locale. Let's just be grateful those 16-inch guns are no longer operative so they didn't fire them off in salute. That would have made the building rock. Also enjoying a great view of the ship were those aboard the Paradise Cruise's dinner sails. And like me, they didn't have to fight the Ala Moana traffic gridlock and hear political speeches at Magic Island. The fireworks look better from a distance, as well ... And it's a shame that amateur golfer Matt Kuchar was brought to his knees by the Olympic Club in S.F., since yesterday was both his birthday and Father's Day and his dad was his caddy. Now that would have been a great story, had he won the thing ...
FORMER Hawaii Newspaper Agency employee Suzie Hasha is an avid fisherperson, as what has become her annual fishing jaunt to Alaska proved again this year. Once more she humbled her husband, Kedric, by catching more and bigger fish than he did. Daily! One of the fish she reeled in -- while standing 5 feet from her husband, who brought aboard a 2-pound "whopper" -- was a 143 pounder. A picture of the two shows the fish as tall as she is, and Suzie is over 6 feet tall. Better luck next year, Kedric ...
Hoarse whispering
THERE were lots of folks whispering behind their hands at at the Mauna Lani Bay's CanoeHouse last week. There was "The Horse Whisperer" himself, Robert Redford, dining with a friend. Hotel G.M. Don Dickhens spotted him and introduced himself. Seems they have a common link -- former Mauna Lani Terrace chef Trey Foshee left there last year to take a job at Redford's Sundance Resort in Utah, where he oversees all their food and beverage outlets. Redford spent some time horsing around in Waimea, and even got in a couple of tennis lessons from pro Jay Paulson at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. No limos for the low-keyed Bob, however. He drove in and out of the resort in a Toyota pickup truck ...IT was something of a hopeless feeling for Liezel and Jesse Agustin when their grandfather, who suffers from Alzheimer's, disappeared from their Kalihi home. The police were notified but were unsuccessful in finding the missing grandfather, Teodoro Dumlao. Their job wasn't any easier since Dumlao speaks no English. Then the two got the bright idea to call KSSK's Michael W. Perry and Larry Price, figuring if their "posse" could track down stolen cars and criminals, why not helpless Alzheimer's patients. The two broadcast his description on the air, and soon listeners were calling in reports of sightings. On the fourth call, Dumlao was reportedly spotted at the airport baggage claim. And sure enough, that's where he was found. Strike up another round of applause for the "posse" ...
And they're off
WE'VE seen the last on-air smile from cheery weatherperson Maria Quiban, whose pearly whites were her best asset on KHNL. Friday was her last day here; she's moving to Southern California to tackle weather duties on the Orange County Newschannel ... And many friends (including Jim & Ann Wayman and Connie Carr) threw aloha parties for Kathleen Steffen, head of Epiphany School for the past 13 years, who's off to Colorado where she'll no doubt steward another small school to excellence ...
