
NCAA summer basketball league to play at St. Louis
After several years at the Kaimuki High School gym, the NCAA Summer Basketball League moves up the street a couple blocks when it opens play a week from Saturday.Because the Bulldogs' facility will be undergoing renovation, the league's new home is McCabe Gymnasium at St. Louis School.
"We were fortunate to work something out on late notice," league director Pat Tanibe said. "For awhile it looked like we might not be able to have the league."
Current and former local college players such as Micah Kroeger, Danny Furlong, Michael Robinson and Llewellyn Smalley will be joined by high school stars including Ramsey Williams and Kirk Uejio on six teams. Admission is free.
SEKI JUMPS TO LEAD: Jim Seki Jr. shot a 67 to grab a four-stroke lead after Friday's second round of the OCC Men's Invitational golf tournament yesterday at Oahu Country Club.
Seki was at 138 after 36 holes, with Gary Kong, who shot a 70 yesterday, and Brandan Kop, who had a 72, both at 142.
Damien Jamila and Lewis Mexia were at 143, and first-round leader Regan Lee shot a 75 and was tied for sixth with Justin Kim at 144.
AUSTRALIA WINS: Team Australia extended its title streak to eight straight years, winning the Hawaiian International Ocean Challenge Friday at Waikiki Beach.
Australia won yesterday's 2,000-meter canoe race in 12 minutes, 52 seconds. Japan was second and Califormia third.
Yatsutoshi Kujirai of Japan won the Beach Flags event, followed by Rian Klenke and Shawn Gibson of Florida.
Australia came back and won the 6-man Paddleboard Relay in 35:07. beating New Zealand (35:46) and California (36:33). Hawaii (37:01) was in fourth.
New Zealand crews took first and second in the 3-Man Ocean Medley Relay, with Australian crews third and fourth.
Australia finished with 246 points for the two-day competition, followed by New Zealand (217.5) and California (157.5), Hawaii (145) was fourth in the seven-team event.
OBREY, KAAIHILI CITED: Baseball player Kainoa Obrey of Iolani School and softball player Kelly Kaaihili of Kamehameha Schools have been selected as Gatorade Circle of Champions players of the year for Hawaii.
The state winners are eligible for regional and national honors.
KAWANA IN ELITE GROUP: Elizabeth Kawana finished in 10th place in the finals of the USA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo., last Sunday.
Kawana, a member of the Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy of Hawaii, had an all-around score of 34.640. Her best individual apparatus score was 9.175 for seventh place in the hoop event.
MIURA BOWLS 300: Kevin Miura bowled a perfect 300 game during Waialae Strike & Spare Club league play on May 30 at Waialae Bowl.
Miura, 19, also had games of 225 and 199 for a 724 series.
JUNIOR BOWLING CHAMPS: Four junior bowlers will represent Hawaii at the $35,000 Scholarship International Coca Cola Youth Bowling Championship Tournament, July 29 to August 2 at Houston, Texas.
Valerie Zahirniak, of the Hickam Youth Bowlers and Don Wagatsuma of the Big Island Junior Bowlers won spots in the 12 to 21 Handicap Division during the qualifying tournament at Schofield Bowling Center.
Holly Hoopii of Waialae Strike & Spare Club and Jason Kuromoto of Aiea Whiz Kids were the winners in the 12 to 21 Scratch Division.
MOANALUA INVITATIONAL: The 50th anniverary of the Moanalua Women's Invitational golf tournament runs Thursday and Friday at Moanalua Golf Course.
Entry fee is $98, which includes a continental breakfast and a luau awards luncheon at the course.
The tournament is dedicated this year to the memory of Billie Beamer, who died in January. Beamer was a club member and a four-time winner of the tournament. She set the loss gross score record for the tournament at 154, a mark that still stands.

STATE RACQUETBALL: The state racquetball and squash singles and doubles championships will be held Thursday, July 16, through Sunday, July 19, at the Honolulu Club.

INTERNATIONAL SOCCER: Sixty teams, included several from Taiwan, are expected to compete in the 3rd Hawaii International Cup Soccer Tournament, July 22-25, at Kapiolani Park.
The field includes boys and girls teams, representing under-8 to under 19 age-group divisions. The deadline for Hawaii teams to register is July 1.
The tournament is hosted by The Bulls Soccer Club of Honolulu and is conducted under the auspices of the Hawaii Youth Soccer Association. For more information, contact Jeff Carlson at 373-3312.
WAHINE SURFING: China Uemura's second annual Wahine Surfing Classic is scheduled for June 27-28 at Queen's Beach in Waikiki. The event is dedicated to the memory of Rell Sunn.
Proceeds from the meet benefit the Sex Abuse Treatment Center of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
There are nine longboard and five shortboard divisions for girls and women of all ages. The event is limited to the first 200 entries.
