The Honolulu Academy of Arts offers a free Japanese Midsummer Festival and Bonfire at 3 p.m. on June 27. The Academy Art Center at Linekona across the street from the Academy of Arts serves as the venue for this family event, which is based on a Japanese purification ceremony. Art academy hosts

The bonfire is traditionally used to burn used ritual objects, thus purifying them. The Academy of Arts will fulfill an obligation to Hanazono Shrine in Tokyo by burning ritual objects sent by the shrine for an exhibit in 1994.
As part of the ceremony participants pass through a large purification ring made of straw or reeds to cleanse themselves of sources of illness and misfortune.
All activities are open to the public. One adult is required per attending child or group of children.

Goldstein is editor of the Hawaii Medical Journal, 1993 Physician of the Year and a member of the Governor's Blue-Ribbon Panel on Living and Dying With Dignity.
Oregon is currently the only state that allows euthanasia, although Rhode Island and Massachusetts have introduced similar laws. A Hawaii measure allowing the practice will be placed before the legislature next year, according to Gov. Ben Cayetano.
