Hawaii’s Cofran
to play in Japan

Shortstop Kehau Cofran of the University of Hawaii softball team, who batted .344 and earned All-Western Conference and second-team NCAA All-West Region honors in her senior season with the Wahine, has signed to play in the Japan Industrial Softball League.

Cofran, a Kailua High School product, will play professionally for "Over the Record," a Japanese entertainment company. The UH Scholar-Athlete award winner will return the university in September to complete her studies and is scheduled to graduate in the spring of 1999.

DEADLINE FOR UH FOOTBALL RENEWALS: Season ticket renewals for the 1998 University of Hawaii football season must be postmarked by Friday. New season ticket sales begin June 22 at the Stan Sheriff Center box office or by calling 944-2697.

Season ticket prices for the general public run from $77 to $133, plus a $4 handling fee. Season ticket prices for students, faculty and staff range from $65 to $117, plus the $4 handling charge.

ANDREWS HAWAII OPEN TENNIS CHAMP: Dave Andrews defeated Preston Kahikina, 6-3, 6-2, in the singles final of the Hawaii Open tennis tournament Monday at the Diamond Head Tennis Center.

Andrews and Kahikina, who are Ala Moana "A" teammates in the Honolulu Tennis League, each advanced to the final without losing a set.

In a men's doubles semifinal, Rick Fried and Ko Dericks beat Bill Liston and John Arakaki, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Fried and Dericks will meet Bob Beckvall and Art Lambert for the title Saturday at Diamond Head.

PAC RIM TRYOUTS: Open tryouts for Team Hawaii's entries into next month's second Pacific Rim Volleyball Tournament are scheduled for Saturday at the University of Hawaii's Gym II.

The tryout for boys begins at 7 a.m., followed by the girls' tryout at 9:30 a.m. To be eligible for the 20-under male team, players need to be born after Jan. 1, 1978; for the 19-under female team, players need to be born after Jan. 1, 1979.

This will be the first year for the girls' tournament. Both fields will include teams from Hawaii, the mainland U.S., Canada, Korea and Taiwan.

The round-robin event is scheduled for July 21-25 at UH. For more information, call Pono Ma'a at 842-8148.

HISTORIC RUN SUNDAY: Nearly 30 historical sites will be featured along the route of Sunday's third Historic Fun Run/Walk.

The benefit for the Hawaii Theatre is a four-mile event that begins at 7:30 a.m. at Prince David Kawananakoa Playground and ends at the Hawaii Theatre on Bethel Street. Musical entertainment will be featured at selected historical sites along the route.

The entry fee is $20 adults and $15 for keiki, which includes a T-shirt and tours of some of the 28 historical venues. Trolleys will shuttle participants from downtown back to the playground.
