The first cantaloupes of the season are out.
Cantaloupe can't miss this week. The new crop melons are 47 cents a pound at Foodland and Sack N Save with a Maika'i Club card, 59 cents at Star Markets, 69 cents at Times Supermarkets, and 75 cents at IGH (Independent Grocers of Hawaii) stores. Wouldnt a wedge of
cantaloupe be nice?Add cantaloupe cubes to frosty smoothies along with banana, pineapple, strawberries, yogurt and ice cubes. Toss cantaloupe chunks into colorful compotes of purple grapes, green kiwi, gold pineapple, red watermelon and crunchy apples.
Or lightly grill cantaloupe kebabs or wedges. To prepare the latter, cut a cantaloupe in half, peel and deseed. Then slice each half into 3/4-inch wedges. Grill the slices until soft but not mushy, about 2 minutes on each side. Cantaloupe offers excellent stores of vitamins A and C.
Other fruitful buys include Gala apples for 59 cents a pound at Safeway with a Safeway Club card; and Braeburn, Granny Smith and Golden and Red Delicious apples for 69 cents at Star.
Island Fresh watermelon is 29 cents a pound at Times and 39 cents at Safeway with discount card.
White Super Sweet corn tops veggie specials at three ears for 99 cents at Foodland and Sack N Save with a discount card.
Chinese cabbages -- both green-stemmed kai choy and white-stemmed bok choy -- are 89 cents a pound at Safeway with a discount card. Tomatoes are 79 cents a pound at IGH, and 99 cents at Times and 99 Ranch Store.
"Surf" savings to discount club members include fresh mahimahi fillet for $5.97 a pound at Foodland and Sack N Save, and Copper River sockeye salmon roast for $4.99 at Safeway.
